We need new laws for disclosure of butyl in any products

most especially ones used in the Home

C6H14O2/CH3(CH2)2CH2OCH2CH2OH

2-butoxyethanol   MSDS info

label all areas where 2-butoxyethanol compounds are stored... with POISON cautions

A primary cancer causing - autoimmune causing chemical exposure

A teratogen, an organic solvent, a neurotoxin, a pesticide, a poison

CAS 111-76-2    Ethylene glycol monobutyl ether    2-butocyethanol
CAS 112-34-5 Diethylene glycol monobutyl ether 2(2-butoxyethanol)

C8H18O3 / CH2(CH2)3OCH2CH2OCH2CH2OHDGME

No EPA restrictions on how much can be put into the air since 2003  When it breaks down it becomes CO2.  I suspect it is a more serious risk for the rapid acceleration of Global Warming than any other singular issue

Special Warnings:  Prevent generation of mists!

What else does 2-butoxyethanol do?  Why is it only a health hazard rating of 1 or 2 when so much harm is found? CAUSES EYE IRRITATION. AFFECTS CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM, BLOOD AND BLOOD-FORMING ORGANS, KIDNEYS, LIVER AND LYMPHOID SYSTEM

2-butoxyethanol is Not Without Research  *

NJ Hazardous Chemical Fact sheet on 2-butoxyethanol pdf

Finds it causes liver cancer in animals ...
No exposure to a carcinogen is safe, say scientists

No Disclosure of any ingredients; yet serious use of product on a written MSDS you can get in 10 days by mail ... which however, are not on the container

MSDS received by mail: Clean Shower MSDS p1-3  pdf  p 4 No ingredients considered harmful, so none disclosed ... but look at warnings for use p2, #8

Wouldn't it seem that there is a chemical that should be disclosed here?  And that these 'how to use' instructions should be on the product or easily available? same as those for 2-Butoxy Ethanol

I note that the paint companies, Fuller O'Brien, in particular, are now putting better warnings on their paint, whereas previously you couldn't find the harmful ingredient, or adequate warnings for such.  They are concerned, I believe, about a suit for Negligent Failure to Warn after the past 10 years of lawsuits re:  lead in paints.

Exposure is not ingestion, however, it is getting the vapors in one's eyes.  It is not JUST kidney failure, but a host of issues that can start up at the same time.

They state:

"Contains Ethylene Glycol (but don't say combined with what)

Can cause kidney damage"

The reason research will not figure out the fatigue of CFIDS, CFS, FM

is because too many things are going on wrong at the same time

and the anemia gets covered up if all you do is look at 'the numbers'

It's like taking 50 medications at the same time and trying to figure out what is going on

You can't

Main issue is the body becoming autoimmune in many areas at once.

Unless and until the harm of BUTYL is found out

and disclosure is required for home cleaning products, too

or any products, for that matter

It never will

I think researchers and doctors can only deal with one variable at a time
Two Cats & Ziggy's Cat 2009
A report from Nancy on what happened to her Persian cat:

I used this rug cleaner a few months ago. As A owner of a Persian cat, a day or so after using this product he became lethargic was vomiting blood and bloody stools. I called the Spot Shot phone number on the can and was told that no way their product caused this illness and it was perfectly safe. My vet bill was over $700.00 What should I do? ... constantly drinks lots of water and has gotten a nervous tick which seems to be not under his control his head jumps at any given time.

Writing to inform you that on 12-21-05 my Persian cat had to be put to sleep.  Kidneys and liver were gone also difficulty breathing his poor little body filled with fluid.  Please do not use Spot Shot Rug Cleaner or any other cleaners containing this deadly poison.  God Bless all and have a healthy holiday.  Owner of the late Persian, "Gizmo."   My heart is broken, he was only 8 years old.

            .

I took a can of this off the shelve at the grocery store - No clue 2-butoxyethanol is there.

What do they say the % is of 2-butoxyethanol?

Looks like up to 25% is 2-butoxyethanol

Recently, my cat (not even two years old) was diagnosed with renal failure. After many tests (and more $2500 of vet bills), the docs are leaning toward a toxin as a cause... the only problem with this diagnosis is that my beautiful little gal is an indoor cat, and I own no plants (or cut flowers) at all. In fact, the only toxin she could possibly have been exposed to is SPOT SHOT... not by me, but by my cat sitter who was caring for my gal just before she became ill.

I now know that the main ingredient is ethylene glycol - which is known to be highly toxic to cats (at least in antifreeze). Have you heard of cats developing kidney failure after exposure to SPOT SHOT. I am still amazed that this product carries no warnings at all for pets and, in fact, advertises itself as great on pet stains.

Kind regards.
Karen 2-5-06

Margaret. I had to let her go on Memorial Day. She had a rare protein leaking nephropathy that no one can quite explain, but was probably not due to spot shot.

With that said, I will never have Spot Shot in my house again.

Karen, I don't think this is as rare as is thought ... it is a precursor to kidney failure:

protein leaking nephropathy

A serious complication of kidney disease, the nephrotic syndrome is a specific collection of signs and symptoms caused by the loss of large amounts of protein from the blood into the urine.  Those with nephrotic syndrome are at high risk for end-stage kidney failure. Once a kidney fails, survival is dependent upon either dialysis or a kidney transplant.  Edema or swelling in the legs and feet is a common complaint.  More

Ziggy's cat poisoned by professional carpet cleaning Jan/09

It is not required to disclose this chemical as the USA previously didn't think it was all that hazardous?

Or there was good lobbying by the chemical companies? (Dow Chemical / Kodak, etc)

It is also important to know the percentage of this chemical / BUTYL that is in a product -

Should not be optional in disclosure laws

In all the carpet cleaners that fully disclose the chemical components, I have been able to find this chemical. Since we clean rentals a lot, my husband asked me to check what was in Bissell carpet cleaning product.  I looked, and looked, and I could not find it. But there was a comment about some ingredients not being disclosed as they were proprietary. No poison should be listed as 'proprietary"

Be careful what you clean with - Exposure to BUTYL can cause serious harm to babies, pets, you!

We need new laws of disclosure. As it is now, companies do not have to disclose to housewives what is in the cleaning products they use. We should consider banning this chemical and if not learn to avoid it! *

Spot Shot carpet cleaner is 25% 2-butoxyethanol & it is SPRAYED, too

Jet Travolta must have run into this type of chemical at age 2 *, took until age 16 before he died *

We are seeing similar signs such as this chemical affecting Senator Ted Kennedy (Kidney stones, walking with cane, seizures from fatigue)

(fatigue of red blood cells?  Lack of oxygen can cause seizures)  Help?

"Glycol alkyl ethers are commonly used as solvents. 2-Butoxy Ethanol is one of the most toxic of the glycol ethers."

"You should use products containing butoxyethanol with extreme care. It is a poison that can easily absorb through your skin to harm you. When working with it, always wear gloves and goggles and be sure the you have enough ventilation."  More probably exposure is vapors in one's eyes ... but NOT ingestion as is suspected by some MSDSs
