When you get around to wanting an accurate diagnosis for your Gulf War Syndrome Symptoms, exhaustion, burning eyes ... ask your doctor to check these items in your blood

Someone I know was spraying a bottle of 409 cleaner to clean with (BAD CHOICE) on June 5, 2003 and then he painted the bathroom with a favorite paint:  Fuller O'Brien Semi-Gloss Interior/Exterior Latex Enamel paint.

Well his eyes started burning and watering and 4 hours later he took his eye contacts out (don't wear contacts; do use goggles & turn on the bathroom fan & open the door)

He said it was not just the cleaning but the painting, too that caused his eyes to start burning.  The next day he exclaimed after a full night's sleep, "Oh, I am SO TIRED!"

I carefully looked at the information on the paint can and could find NO 2-butuoxyethanol.  I looked on the internet and didn't find it, so asked the company for the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) which they did mail me.  I looked carefully thru the ingredients and did not find 2-butoxyethanol listed. (Mind you that by this time I had been studying 2-butoxyethanol in seriousness for a full year.)

We bought another 5 gallon container since then as we really like this paint.  Now it comes in a red plastic container; it used to be a black metal one.  Just now I took a look again at the WARNINGS on this paint, (after noticing EPA states latex paint contains 2-butoxyethanol) .... and what do I see?   This paint contains ethylene glycol  (That's another name for it - well actually ethylene glycol monobutyl ether)

AND now that I know to look for what the Warning signs are ... they are there, too:  wash eyes for 15 minutes with water; they even state kidney damage; birth defects possible.  The warnings go on to suggest respirators might be helpful.

2-butoxyethanol aka EGMBE, (9CI), BUTOXYETHONOL, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, ethylene glycol butyl ether, ethylene glycol n-butyl ether, butyl glycol, buytl cellosolve

is common in many products  -  KNOWN USES:

  • SOLVENT FOR MINERAL OILS
  • IN SPRAY LACQUERS
  • VARNISH REMOVERS
  • AND INKS
  • IN DEGREASERS IN INDUSTRIAL
  • IN DEGREASERS IN HOUSEHOLD CLEANERS

It really frightens me to think that builders must be getting a lot of exposure to this ingredient - and that when they say they have no energy they may have had an exposure to 2-butoxyethanol!

The person who only spent an afternoon washing & painting a very small bathroom has since become pretty 'fly-off-the-handle'  I'm really concerned for him.  But will he go to the doctor?  Afraid not.  Well he doesn't want to go blind and end up with multiple cancers, does he?  AVOID this chemical exposure at all costs, and since it is in so many products, that will be hard to do.  WATCH OUT!

A couple of days later, I asked an expert in such exposures what to do:

Dear Diann:

He needs IV nutrients, heat therapy, neutralization and immune boosters.  Call and speak with Sue Owen at 214/373-5146 if we can help.

Sincerely,

William J. Rea, M.D.

Dear Dr. Rea,

I know someone who was around too much vapors from 409 Cleaner last Thursday - June 5

-when washing down a bathroom in a rental before painting...

409 cleaner has 2-butoxyethanol & ethylene oxide in it;

& he said his eyes hurt then;

the next morning - he was expressing how tired he was...  (blood damage happens right away with too much exposure)

http://www.valdezlink.com/409msds.htm

Please pray he will be OK   - But if the hemolytic anemia is showing up right away, and harm to retina of eyes, too... what help is there?

How long after exposure to 2-butoxyethanol is neutralization helpful?

info on chemical www.valdezlink.com/same.htm

I really believe that this chemical - 2-butoxyethanol is the cause of gulf war syndrome

and the reason the USA can't figure it out, is that it is hidden in the ingredients of products used, even in the military  www.valdezlink.com/usa_hoodwinked.htm   I am hoping this will be credibly studied www.valdezlink.com/study_needed.htm

Note:  Paint companies in the last decade have been sued

for concerns about Negligent failure to warn

The suits pinpoint lead - and the paint companies are 'getting off'

example &  MD court case

Now, paint companies know the hazards of 2-butoxyethanol are more serious

and they are protecting themselves NOW by putting proper WARNINGS on  paint!

"Glycol alkyl ethers are commonly used as solvents. 2-Butoxy Ethanol is one of the most toxic of the glycol ethers. You should use products containing butoxyethanol with extreme care - avoid if possible. It is a poison that can easily absorb through your skin to harm you. When working with it, always wear gloves and goggles and be sure the you have enough ventilation."

Some day, we can  hope that the ethylene glycol ethers will be banned.

Or you can expect these components of your blood to be damaged
